Moto: CtS 2004: Inner Passage
The following pictures are from the trip through the Inner Passage- some from the outbound passage, some from the inbound passage. The Inner Passage is basically parallel to Highway 26 from Vantage to Colfax. It's an alternative to slabbing down I-90 or the dull passage along Hwy 26. Credit goes to Sir Denzler for naming it in 1999.
Part of the Inner Passage, for me, was exploring gravel roads. I found Goose Lake during that process.
Basalt Towers
I found these along the Inner Passage. They look like smaller, older versions of Devils Tower in Wyoming. The scale is significantly different- these must rise 150 feet at the most. Basically, these were caused by a huge flood that covered most of Washington and surrounding states. The water scoured most of the surrounding countryside away. More (much, much more!) is available on this topic, thanks to James Perkins.
Abandoned Building
There are plenty of abandoned buildings in Washington state. There are a few near us in Seattle, but they are usually not very photogenic. I saw a couple while I was running the Inner Passage, and I stopped at two. There are only pictures of one because a big dog escorted me away from the other one.
Combine
A combine is used to harvest wheat. They are like a large lawnmower, but must be careful to harvest the wheat without losing the grain. The machine sorts out the stalks from the seeds (grain), and tosses the stalks back onto the ground. (That's what "separating the wheat (grain) from the chaff (stalks)" means).
This picture was taken in Lind, Washington. This town is most (in)famous for the annual Combine Demolition Derby. No, I'm not joking.
For what it's worth, this combine is a Case 1680 model.
