Moto: CtS 2004: Snow
I was quite surprised when we encountered the snow. I had a bad experience dropping my bike because of snow in Hyder, Alaska, but I forged ahead with the rest of the group. Apparently it wasn't that much of a surprise to Ken- he said they had to turn around at that same place a few years back.
While it is convenient to call this snow, it is actually a large accumulation of hail. The pass is over 6,000 feet, and there was a fast thunderstorm that rolled through the area the day before. There was probably a mile of the hail at the pass, and another half mile after the fork on the way back down the south side.
Since the hail was quickly melting, there was a LOT of water on the tracks. When we turned after the fork, we weren't able to follow tire tracks through the snow, so Ken took the lead and followed the stream of water that was going down one of the tracks most of the time.
