Day19: Virginia, DC
I spent a couple hours riding north through Shenandoah. It is well over 100 miles long, and the speed limit is 35mph, so it takes a while! I saw some deer, a little bobcat (or something similar), as well as other critters. I also stopped at several of the overlooks. It's pretty neat to see so many valleys to the east and west of the park. The concept of a road along the ridge line is pretty amazing. I wonder if it could even be done in the West.

Once I got out of the park, I was a few miles outside of Winchester. I rode to a Waffle House for a big meal (not a big tasty meal- just a meal). I then rode to a FlyingJ that I had marked on the GPS. I had at least two hours to kill, and haven't had any wifi, so I figured the wifi in the FlyingJ would work well. Unfortunately, there was no FlyingJ. In fact, it was just an empty field. Hmm. I must have entered the coordinates incorrectly.

So, I headed over to EagleRider Winchester. Carol got me sorted out within a few minutes and I was on the road to DC.
I guess I haven't really said anything about it, but today I'm being joined by Tamara *and* my parents. My parents have rented a Harley from EagleRider, and the four of us will be going along the Outer Banks for the next 5 days or so. Then my parents fly home and it is just Tamara and I on our one bike.
Okay, enough of that. So I rode the ~80 miles to DC from Winchester and parked at the airport. I knew I had time to kill, so I locked my gear onto the bike and carried my laptop into the airport. Since I'd last used my laptop while camping, I desperately needed power. I looked around the airport for power next to a comfy seat- nada. Oh well, I found power in a corner, so I sat on the floor for several hours. I guess that's better than no power.
While waiting at the airport, I noticed how much more dressed-up everyone is. I forgot that the East Coast (and especially the DC area) is like that. I'm used to the ultra-casual Northwest and even the West in general. People were in suits, women were in skirts and high heels, I saw a handful of scarves, and so on. It certainly isn't what I'm used to, and made me miss the laid-back style of Portland.
Once their flight arrived (late), Dad and I went two-up on my DL650 up to Winchester. We grabbed his Harley, then rode back down to DC with it. Yes, that means I did that trip three times today! It rained on us both ways- not a ton, but enough to make us wet and cold. We also saw some lightning on both legs of the trip.
