Day39: Vermont, New Hampshire, Ben & Jerry's, Franconia Notch
200 miles, 10 hours.
We woke up to rain around 6am, so we slept in a little. Thankfully, by the time we actually got up (a little before 8), it had settled down and things weren't horribly wet. We packed up and got on the road.
Our morning route was over the Camel's Hump ridge. It's basically a rough ridge in Vermont with a fun pass. After dispatching one car, I had a great time going up the steep, windy road. Tamara jolted abruptly after one corner- I thought she had just woken up, but it turns out her foot made contact with the pavement in the sharp turn and it scared her! After some instruction to not jolt the bike through the corner again, we had a great time going up and then back down the pass.

We took some country highways through scenic territory and then stopped at the Ben and Jerry's factory for a tour. It wasn't terribly impressive- basically 20% of going to the Tillamook Cheese Factory, and they charge a couple of dollars. Nor is there much else to do there. Oh well.

On the way out, we stopped at a hardware store for some glue and a small screwdriver (my stove's igniter has been broken for weeks). We then took an interstate and scenic highways to St. Johnsbury for lunch and a stop at a maple syrup plant. Their tours had just concluded for the day- they stop early. That was okay, we read through the informative signs, bought some sweets and syrup for ourselves, then putted down the road. We should have stayed in St. Johnsbury longer- it was a neat town in an interesting area.

The next stop was Franconia Notch. We started by going up the Cannon Tram and walking around the summit. The clouds were closing in so the views were limited, but it was still very scenic. It was neat to be standing on top of where three ridges come together.

We stopped early (5pm) at the Lafayette campground. It's large, but mostly empty, and it means we get nice showers. Can't complain about that.

I spent the next 2.5 hours running into a nearby town to take care of some important business back home, and Tamara set up our tent and hung out at the campground. So it wasn't a very stress-free evening for me, but at least I got the business taken care of.
