3/28: San Miguel de Allende (Tamara posting)
Tuesday, 3/27
I went and sat in on the silversmith class this morning, but I just don't think it will be a good fit. This school is geare
d more toward serious artists, plus the instructor is the type I don't think I would work well with (doesn't seem incredibly patient, yells too much). What I'm really looking for is weekend workshop type classes, but I'm not so into it that I have to do it now.
Also, I've been a little sick.. just Montezuma's Revenge – hooray. Not too bad, and Ted has been fine, so I'm not sure what it is from. No big deal, just glad we brought some Immodium. Also took a dose of antiobiotics per the travel doc's pre-trip instructions.
So, we're bumming about town today and tomorrow. We browsed through the Tuesday market, a sort of flea market for locals, and picked up lunch, fresh strawberries, and saw some really cute puppies and pretty birds. We saw quite a few soldiers/policemen wande
ring around the market, some in full riot gear. We couldn't figure out what they were doing until we talked about it with a fellow hosteler with whom we shared a cab to the market. Apparently, they were grabbing all the pirated DVDs and CDs. Also, a British gal here at the hostel said she's always scared/surprised at the semi-automatic weapons the police carry, since at home they only have those wooden sticks.

So we have had it drilled into us that San Miguel is one of the best places to be for Semana Santa (Holy Week before Easter). We decided that we like it here enough to stay for a couple weeks to be here for that celebration and I will maybe look into another place to take silversmith classes, photography classes or cooking classes.
Since we are staying here for a while, we spent most of the day looking for an apartment for the next couple weeks so that we have a little more privacy and room. We found a great deal – a 2 bedroom place with a back patio, and shared courtyard we can put the bike in. We will have a ton of room, and will only lose our wifi. It is less than the room we have here at the hostel – we got a great deal.
We also spent some time at the public library that has an extensive English-language section. We tried to go to a seminar on Semana Santa, but it was sold out. They did, however, have a good little cafe, where we splurged on some non-Mexican fare.
Oh, and I'm finally feeling better now.. :)
