4/12: To Pachuca and Teotihicuan
Today was the first Transit Day since leaving San Miguel de Allende. We rode the 200 miles to Pachuca, got our package from the US- yay! We've been worrying about that for two weeks now. We had to pay about $40USD customs for it, I had to sign for it on about a dozen different forms, but we got our stuff. It's nice to finally have guidebooks (for Mexico, Central, *and* South America). We also have some new reading material, and supplemented our meager selection of clothing.
On our way out of San Miguel Tamara found the plumbing store we'd looked for a week previous. After talking to them, they had an end cap for the tool tube that works. It isn't perfect, but it's better than no cap and losing tools. Amusingly, I screwed it on tight, not wanting to lose a *third* cap this trip. Unfortunately I screwed it on *too* tight- I can't get it off now! I might use a BMW strap for leverage, but I'll probably have to wait until I can borrow a large monkey wrench or similar.
From there Pachuca, we went down to Teotihicuan. It's a short distance, maybe 50 miles. We rode in and spent about two hours climbing the main pyramid and wandering around the grounds. It's at least a full mile from one end to the other. I wasn't terribly inspired, though Tamara was more so than I. It is pretty amazing to stand on top of a 210 foot pyramid and look around, and seeing murals that are over two thousand years old is pretty neat, too.
After a great dinner of tacos con chorizo, we had a little mixup finding a hotel. We weren't able to find one in a nearby city to Teotihicuan, so we paid a taxi to take us to the neighboring city. We are in a tiny room, perfect for the night.
Tomorrow we'll skirt Mexico City and head for a highway that will take us to Oaxaca, our next real destination.
